Great Indian Banyan

Image
The Great Banyan is a banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis) located in Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, Howrah, near Kolkata, India. It was the widest tree in the world in terms of the area of the canopy and is estimated to be about 200 to 250 years old. It became diseased after it was struck by lightning, so in 1925 the middle of the tree was excised to keep the remainder healthy; this has left it as a clonal colony, rather than a single tree. A 330 m long road was built around its circumference, but the tree continues to spread beyond it.....     History and Description The Great Banyan tree is over 250 years old and in spread it is the largest known in India, perhaps in Asia. There is no clear history of the tree, but it is mentioned in some travel books of the nineteenth century. It was damaged by two great cyclones in 1884 and 1886, when some of its main branches were broken and exposed to the attack of a hard fungus. With its large number of aerial roots, The G

IANS 'Nadunisi Naaygal' an unimpressive show by star director Menon (Tamil Movie Review)

Film: 'Nadunisi Naaygal'; Cast: Sameera Reddy, Veera, Ashwin and others; Director: Gautham Vasudev Menon; Producer: Photon Kathaas; Cinematography: Manoj Paramhamsa; Editor: Antony; Art Director: Rajeevan; Rating: ** 1/2 Menon, who floated his own production house Photon Kathaas, is out with his first venture as a producer. 'Nadunisi Naaygal', a psycho-thriller, is directed by Menon himself. The film has no big star, except Sameera Reddy, music, songs or picturesque locations and is certainly a bold step by the director. Trade sources are amazed at the opening the film has managed to receive, but 'Nadunisi Naaygal' is not Menon's best work. Samar aka Veera (Veera) transforms into a deadly psycho-killer because of his womanizing father's sexual exploitation during his childhood. It's not something we haven't seen earlier and it's not wrong on our part to have expected Menon to do a better job in depicting this. The childhood days of V

Smallest Railway

The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway is a 1 ft 3 in (381 mm) gauge light railway in Kent, England. The 13+1⁄2 miles (22 km) line runs from the Cinque Port of Hythe via Dymchurch, St. Mary's Bay, New Romney and Romney Sands to Dungeness, close to Dungeness nuclear power station and Dungeness lighthouse. From 1926 to 1978, the RH&DR held the title of the "Smallest public railway in the world" (in terms of track gauge). The title was lost to the 12 1⁄4 in (311 mm) gauge Réseau Guerlédan in France in 1978[2] and regained from 1979, when the Réseau Guerlédan closed, until 1982, when the 10 1⁄4 in (260 mm) gauge Wells and Walsingham Light Railway opened. The railway was featured in an episode of the BBC series The Inspector Lynley Mysteries
